Small trees in pots

The City of Morris will be giving away 100 trees on May 16th and 17th in honor of Arbor Month 2025.

The trees will be given away to Morris property owners on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be a limit of one tree per property.  The free tree must be planted on private property — not on the city boulevard — within the Morris city limits.

The goal of the program is to increase Morris’s tree canopy and to help reduce energy costs for residents.

The trees will be given away on Friday, May 16, from 1 to 5pm, and Saturday, May 17, from 8am to noon, at the Morris City Shops.  The City Shops are located on County Road 22 across from the Stevens County Fairgrounds.

There will be 12 varieties to choose from.  Six of the choices are tall shade trees:  hackberry, ginkgo, honeylocust, maple, Mongolian linden, and planetree.  The other six are shorter trees:  amur chokecherry, Ohio buckeye, and four varieties of flowering crabapples with white, pink, and red blossoms.

Each tree will come with a bag of wood-chip mulch and detailed instructions for planting and aftercare.

Volunteers will be at the City Shops on May 16th and 17th to answer questions and help residents choose a tree.

At least 5 days before picking up their tree, property owners will need to call Gopher State One at 1-800-252-1166 to have their underground utilities marked.  Marking the utilities will help residents choose a good planting spot, and will make sure underground lines aren’t accidentally damaged during planting.

Property owners who need more information are asked to call the Morris City Hall at 320-589-3141.
