The City of Morris Has a New Zoning Map
The process to complete and approve a zoning map for the Orderly Annexation Area just outside the City Limits, and updates to the City Zoning Map and Ordinance has been completed. This means the new map and regulations are now officially in use as of December 26, 2011.
This process has been going on for many, many years, but it has finally been completed. The center piece of the process is a new zoning map that not only reflects the current thinking about development in the City of Morris, but also includes the development of the area just outside the City Limits. This area is called the Orderly Annexation Area. The City has the right to determine what takes place in this area because of an agreement between the City, County and the four Townships that surround the City.
There were no major changes made to what we have and what is being done in the areas that were previously designated on the Zoning Map. Generally speaking, the City has been developing according to the plan that was put in place, but now the relationships and authority lines are clear. This includes what specific government unit is watching which specific area. For instance, the City will now issue building permits and make determinations for zoning in the Orderly Annexation Area just outside the City Limits. In some cases, the County or Townships were doing these things. In some cases, nobody was doing these things.
Things should be clear now. As the Zoning Administrator for the City of Morris, I now know what map to use. I know exactly what the zoning areas are and what can be done in them. As the City Manager, I know where we should focus our resources moving forward. I know where we will need infrastructure available for residential, commercial or industrial development. I know what people can and can't do.
